Share something nice using the text box above. Maybe it’s a great coffee spot you’d recommend. A recent accomplishment that you’re proud of. A fond memory, or an act of kindness you just witnessed.
Your messages will go to my email. Every week, I’ll copy and paste the emails I receive as plain text, right here, for people to read through. I’ll keep things anonymous unless you tell me otherwise. I’m really glad you’ve stopped by. That’s all.
hi hfx is not social media. There are no accounts, profiles, pages, logins, downloads, notifications, settings, algorithms, media, friends, tagging, searching, saving, chats, sponsors, AI, ads, or anything remotely intelligent.
It’s just me (I’m 27 and live in Halifax). I wanted to make a rudimentary and refreshing way to let people share and learn cool things about our city with one another. If you’re sick of social apps like I am, maybe this can be a fun change of pace.

“Happy new year!”
“I was at the self-checkout at Sobeys when I noticed an elderly man with a walker suddenly look up from bagging his groceries to yell, “Hey, wait!” – but the younger guy ahead of him didn’t wait. The elderly man stood there in shock for a second and then turned to the employees and went, “He just paid for me! He just paid for my groceries!” The employees exchanged a glance and shrugged; one just said, “‘Tis the season!” The man was stunned and almost a bit indignant – “That shouldn’t be possible! He just paid for me and ran! Do I look that desperate?” but the employees were just quietly taking it completely in stride, and I grinned all the way home. I love the Maritimes.”
“The music scene around here is wonderful. I love how easy it is to discover new bands and songwriters and works across all genres. Pretty much every week I see posters about independent acts from Atlantic Canada that are new to me (I moved here in 2024). Today I learned about Grand Theft Bus, and their name cracked me up so much that I ended up giggling helplessly on the sidewalk.”
“Today just before lunch I thought of a friend I hadn’t crossed paths with in a while and decided it was time to catch up with her over coffee or drinks. I went to my computer, opened my email, and discovered that she had just emailed me to suggest exactly the same thing! It absolutely made my day.”

“The house at the Hammonds Plains road end of pockwock has a lights display that changes with the seasons. It’s a literal bright spot for thousands who drive by in the dark every day. Thank you Pockwock house!”
“I have had a lot of haircuts in my life, but was seriously impressed this week by Jandi at JK Hair Salon in the north end (in a shared space next to the Almonak restaurant). She’s also super friendly. I already can’t wait to go back!”

“I turned 50 this year, and I feel there isn’t enough time left to complete all the things I want to do ! My head is so full of new projects, things I want to learn about and places I want to see. Real, or delulu ?”
“I went to an event with a cash-only entrance fee of $10, so ducked into Sobeys to take out some cash and buy a small lunch to break up a $20 bill. The store wasn’t very busy, but a lady in line still insisted that I and my two items go ahead of her! I said I’d pass the kindness along. Will be watching for opportunities to do a random nice thing for someone. :)”
“Snow, snow, snow! yippee! I had a wonderful breakfast this morning, with honey and arugula and ham and baguette and tea.”
“I cleaned out my pantry this morning (Thursday). There were a bunch of things that had been sitting around for months without getting used. Of these, the ones that were still sealed and still good, I took to the Community Fridge on Carlton Street just south of Spring Garden. When I opened the door to the shelves, I saw that someone had donated (at least) TWENTY SIX loaves of bread. Poverty is horrible and my opinion is that no one should ever have to deal with it. Until we sort that out, I’m at least glad to see so much interest in making sure food gets directly into the hands of local people who need it and don’t have other ways of getting it.”
“I’d just like to appreciate the existence of oat milk. I’m allergic to almost everything, including dairy and soy milk and pretty much every kind of nut or seed I’ve ever encountered. This means that I spent years buying only rice milk – which is a lot better than nothing, but pretty bland. The fact that oat milk came along and is now widespread has really changed my life for the better. It tastes super good, works well in baking, AND allows me to order interesting drinks at coffee shops. I hope I never take it for granted.”
“Came back to Toronto after living in Halifax for my first semester at uni. I wasn’t sure if I fit into the culture after moving in from a big city. Now that I’m back home I find myself craving the sweetness and comfort that Halifax brings. I miss smiling at strangers and knowing they’ll smile back. I miss seeing the water everyday and seeing how I’ve changed in its reflection. I miss everyone who made Halifax so insanely special. Distance really does make the heart grow fonder! I feel so lucky to experience the warmth of Halifax for many more months to come hehe”
“Hi I’m shy”
“A confluence of circumstances meant I couldn’t avoid going to the mall 4 days before Christmas. I was dreading the crowds and the canned Christmas music. Neither was as bad as I’d feared, which was an active relief. Shout out to the shoe store that was playing ‘Party Rock Anthem’ while I had a bit of a wait. Totally acceptable!”
“Recently discovered the in-woods trail off of the main walking trail in Clayton Park West behind the BMO Soccer Centre. It was a snowy evening but the walking path was clear enough to easily navigate. It was so peaceful and beautiful. Halifax has so many hidden gems. I hope more people share them on here!”
“I need to recognize the Little Free Libraries here. I moved to Halifax from a town that had none at all. I don’t blame the locals there for that, but I really missed LFLs while I was there. I walk a lot, and in the last year and a half, I’ve found TWENTY-EIGHT Little Free Libraries on the Peninsula alone! I love going for a walk, picking a street I’ve never seen before, and waiting for LFLs to show up. They often do!”
“Away for Christmas and already missing Halifax and home! Lots of love to all you guys and the best of the season, whether you celebrate or not. Best Town Ever.”
“I spilled tomato juice all over my shirt…but fortunately the shirt in question is already red and can go in the wash. Whew!”

“One of the things I love about this city is that (at least if you live on the peninsula) you kinda have to go out of your way to find the chain stores. So many of the shops are independent, or at least part of regional chains rather than generic big boxes. It’s such a pleasure to get to know the staff at a little local shop carrying unique products, established by the founders because they wanted to!”
“Flew home to Halifax this week from Montreal. Looking for our gate, we passed groups waiting for destinations like Vancouver, Regina, Toronto, etc. So excited to finally find ‘our people’, the friendly folk we expect to be wearing Blundstones, kilts, and souwester hats.”
“Thanks for letting me go at the intersection :)”
“To whoever covered my open car window yesterday when the snow was coming down sideways in the south end: thank you. I was extremely stressed and forgot to close it before I went to an appointment. I came out to see my window covered with a garbage bag. Halifax, don’t ever stop being you.”
“People are just so nice here. Thanks for making Halifax a community that is welcoming to strangers. Someone offered my daughter brand new socks on the ferry last night because her socks were getting bunched up in her boot.”
“Even though it’s dark early, so many houses get their Christmas lights out and I find that brings back a little light stolen from the early hour darkness.”
“My wife is a residence in a long-term care home in Halifax, and every day that I visit I’m just absolutely blown away at the professionalism and kindness and absolute skill that those workers bring to their job. They are incredible… Absolute heroes. I’m just humbled.”
“I got my first A+ as a final course grade in university! I try really hard with my academics and put alot of pressure on myself so it’s really nice to finally be rewarded with this. Feeling very proud of myself :)”
“Shout out to the employees at LUSH who were insanely busy, but took the time to be helpful and kind as they interacted with me and my 10 year old.”
“A lady at Walmart paid for one of my items. I was short just under $2. She made my day I’m still thinking about days later. I hope something nice happened to that lady this week.”
“has walking become scarier lately, or am i just getting more anxious?”
“I was walking along a sidewalk in Bayers Lake and a stranger pulled over and stopped me just to ask if she could give me a ride! I was only going another block and a half to my doctor’s office so I gently declined, but this was really kind. And then, after my appointment, there was a glorious big rainbow in the sky to the north.”
“i just got back from visiting s good friend ottawa. i love their trains but i love our city more. dreaming of the ferry expansion… it’ll get here!”

“I’m glad people are sharing joy during the winter blues. Many people are kind in this city, I love the wet rain lapping at my face. In this city a botany seller, Coastal Carnivorous, has sold me a pygmy sundew. I’ve named him Martian Manhunter, he has saved my life. It rains and all I think about is collecting rainwater. I wake up and my first thought is turning on the grow light. This city gives gifts to the people who cherish them. Stay safe this winter and maybe check out coastal carnivorous’s plants.”
“halifax has so many talented artists and interesting creative spaces, classes, and opportunities! in the age of AI, i think it’s especially important to support real, human creators in any way you can. the use of AI in my workplace, online, and in big box stores has been really depressing me lately. shop local this holiday season! check out all of the craft fairs going on! check out the evergreen festival! support the artists in your life! host craft nights and make your own cards and handmade presents! keep art alive in halifax! <3”
“I have learned so much since I moved to Halifax, and now I have so many cool friends. I’m so excited for the snow. My mom is coming to visit for a week or so, yay!”
“I am dreaming about having a sandwich as big as my head…”
“Yesterday, I was looking at the snow come down sideways. It reminded me of all the things that are both beautiful and fleeting. The touch of hands when you are too nervous to admit feelings yet; the bridge of a song that hits just right; the help of a stranger on a tough day.”
“Eat the frog. Get the worst thing of your day out of the way and then enjoy the rest!
I hope you have a fantastic day :)”
“Wair until after dark, then go visit the Newman Gardens (the little outdoor area on the north side of the IWK Hospital, along Morris Street). They are just COVERED in gorgeous holiday lighting in all colours! I went this evening and almost immediatetly said “wow!” without planning to.”

“We had a visitor from upper New York state this week. Gloomy November isn’t usually a great time to be a tourist here, but we had sunny days and lovely sunrises and sunsets. She was charmed by the Hydrostone area, loved the Halifax boardwalk, enjoyed a bracing walk on Lawrencetown beach and was one of only 7 people visiting Peggy’s Cove. She had a grand time!”
“There is the sweetest older gentleman in my neighbourhood who always says a big hello to everyone he passes on his morning walks, wishes the kids a good day at school, etc. I look forward to our quick chats on the days I head out for a walk too. It’s small but has a big impact <3”

“Really struggling tonight to the point of wondering how much longer I can go on. I remembered this beautiful site and reread some of the messages. Thank you Halifax for helping me. And thank you B, look what a wonderful thing you’ve done here.”
“I’ve been FaceTiming my brother a lot lately and every time he answers we laugh and laugh. We’re doing a lot of brainstorming for our goals and schemes for next year and it’s fun to feel the excitement of a new year while in the coziest part of this year.”
“I have some chronic health issues and they’re under pretty good control these days but one of my big symptoms is that I’m almost always cold. It finally occurred to me to buy an electric blanket. This thing has changed my life! My sleep quality is much better now that I don’t need more than an hour to warm up enough to be able to fall asleep. I might try heated clothing next, especially as it would be a LOT cheaper and probably more environmentally friendly than heating my apartment to 26 degrees all the time.”
“I’m very grateful for this little life :) It’s the season of crafting and preparing for the holidays. What a joy it is”
“A year ago, the western edge of the Common had a handful of tents. This year, the city has put up a sign there saying NO CAMPING. Someone has very cleverly added a few letters to the sign so that it now reads IT’S NOT CAMPING, which I prefer by far. I hope we can get more tiny-home communities and other solutions going here. Housing is a human right and no one “deserves” to be without it.”
“I got out of bed, got dressed, felt a bit hungry, and suddenly remembered that I bought SO MUCH CEREAL yesterday.”
“I am a local educator of young adults and about 1/3 of my students are queer in one or more ways. So are some of my friends and family members. My heart has been hurting for what trans/nonbinary people in the U.K. and U.S. have been going through, and I know it isn’t a magical utopia here either (yet!). Trans Day of Remembrance is something that has become personal, unfortunately, in my adult life; but I’m also glad for the chance to pause and remember. I’m comforted to see what the front page of Wikipedia looks like today. The entire “Did you know?” box is devoted to chronicling trans lives, cross-cultural approaches to gender, and what transphobia looks like. This gives me so much hope. I love the trans people in my life so much. More awareness please, more acceptance and love for the huge range of ways in which humans experience gender (or not), selfhood, attraction, and fulfilment.”

“Woke up to the first snow of the year and construction in my neighbour’s yard. One of these I expected. It’s getting cold again, and there are a great deal of people I miss. Some still live here, some don’t, both parties feel particularly far away today. On the 9b I saw a child with an incredibly blue mouth clutching a lollipop stick & making faces at himself in the glass. My recommendations for the month are ginger tea, halloumi, backpack covers, medieval woodcuts of animals, and deedee’s shaker lemon ice cream. I miss you”
“Was tired by the time I went to Sobeys this evening, but someone had the licence plate UR CUTE and it made me smile.”
“Im new to this city and have had a hard time meeting people. Today I went to do a marketplace purchase expecting more awkard silence. But the man was so kind and sat and talked with me for a few minutes. He didnt know I needed that.
“there is so much joy in rereading, in sewing patches on comfy clothes, and creating cozy little nooks. May your early nesting for winter be joyful.”
“The annual poppy display at Sullivan’s Pond is so impressive: 10,000 poppies all handmade by residents of a Dartmouth nursing home, and other volunteers. A fitting tribute to Canada’s fallen soldiers.”

“It’s 10am on a sunny Saturday morning in August.
I’d just finished running a 20km run at the chain of lakes trail with a few friends.
We started at 6am and finished around 9am. We run for fun, weird right?
After grabbing coffee at Uncommon Grounds, I dropped my friend off at her house.
It’s 10am (remember?) and I’m feeling fulfilled, calm, and excited for the day ahead,
instead of taking the turns which would get me back to my place quickest, I decided to take a couple random turns.
Why not cruise the city on a sunny Saturday morning after shitting in the woods hours earlier?
After my second random turn, I see something that confused and intrigued me; a moustached dude in his twenties, sat behind a table on the street, talking to a few people at his stand.
He’s got jugs of what looks to be lemonade on the table. I can’t be sure. A moustached man selling lemonade on the corner? Never seen that before.
A man on the corner with jugs of urine, his own or someone else’s – I have seen before.
Before jumping to conclusions that this guys got jugs of his pee on the table for free consumption, I yelled out my window (interrupting his possible new pee drinking companions/customers)
“HEY WHAT YOU GOT GOING ON OVER HERE?!!?”
(Semi Important Reminder; I’m in runners high cruise mode at this point – the window’s already rolled down.)
“It’s a free lemonade stand dude, want some?” He asked.
“Sure dude.” I said as I parked up.
Grabbed a cup of lemonade from him, and AH – Refreshing!
“this is cool and whyyy are you doing this?” I asked.
“I’m trying to promote my new social media platform that is actually social, and I don’t want to run ads to promote it, so I figured a good ol lemonade stand could work.”
He told me about HiHFX, and I thought it was really cool; likeminded residents slowing down and sharing something nice with their neighbours.
We chatted for 10 minutes about the state of social media and how it feels more self serving than community driven
Everyone can have distaste for the way things are, but he decided to do something about it – which I admire.
He gave me a card and told me to write about this interaction on the platform.
I asked for his IG, which of course he didn’t have.
And we went our separate ways.
This morning I found the card he gave me, in my laptop sleeve.
I could’ve just thrown it out and moved on with my life, but finding the card brought back these memories.
I could’ve made an excuse to not join the 20km run that morning. I could’ve not shit on my shoes in the woods. I could’ve not taken the random turns. I could’ve driven right past mustachio lemonade cool guy.
But I’d always have that open loop in my mind, saying ‘you met that guy who was building something cool, and you never contributed what you could to it.’
Fuck that.
Hi Hfx!”
“I moved here in 2024 and somehow ended up following this little weekly blog about local businesses that are coming and going and moving and changing hands, with an emphasis on independents. From the looks of things, it’s run by one guy and the reason he’s doing it is “he wants to”. https://halifax.retales.ca/“

“days are shorter, crisper, and the colours will soon reach a peak – it’s my favorite time of year….got a $7 fleece plaid shirt at “sally ann” for long cool walks in the northend and changed my flip flops to sneakers but it’s ok as…. it’s my favorite time of year….the purple, blue and pink hydrangeas are a little more bright now that the heat has gone, and they are at their fall peak and if no one is watching, you can snap one off and take it home to add to your collection – I don’t think people will mind…after all….it’s my favorite time of year – and maybe it’s theirs and they don’t mind sharing their hydrangeas? I want to see every orange, yellow, red tree as we only have a few weeks, and with the passing of Canadian thanksgiving (the best thanksgiving – who has thanksgiving weeks before xmas??), and my favorite time of year will always include Halloween, and all things eerie – scary, and fun – and then the year will wrap up soon for 2025…..and we will be hopeful for a new and better year ahead but for now – my heart is full of fall….”

“Was told to post my mom’s encounter at gmc on robie street here from reddit so: This was a couple weeks ago but its been on my mind. My mom made the grave mistake of believing a building sign, in the gmc parking lot on Robbie it has a building that says Collison and my elderly mom went there thinking thats what it was, but I guess it moved, anyway my mom went in and she said a nice perky young lady gave her the address of the right place and even suggested going to permanent shine on kempt road to see if they can remove a small scuff on her car after she hit something. So the little lady with the braid, you made my mom’s day being so kind and talking to her, she said you made her feel less lonely that day whoever your boss it tell them you deserve the world just for how kind you were to her (Also she never got the scuff fixed, she was to giddy with your attitude she took me out for dinner so thanks for the nuggets from a 35 year old gal who likes seeing her mom smile) also you should probably have “collison” removed off your building if you havent already its confusing”

“Life is a long path to travel, watch it with patience.”
“Still having culture shock after relocating here a few weeks ago. The kindness everyone here has shown us has been the equivalent of a warm hug from a dear friend you haven’t seen in a long time. Mundane experiences are transformed into small moments of kindness and gratitude. It’s infectious! I’m so proud to be a new Haligonian. Everyone in our household is already responding with small gestures of kindness each day when previously in our worldly travels these moments would just pass unnoticed, strangers remained strange and disconnected, the world felt impersonal and hollow. Everyone here is just a friend we haven’t yet met. Gone is the rushing, the stress, the hustle. In its place is a smile, a door held open, a car that stops so we can safely cross, a helpful tidbit of info about the place we now call home, an interesting story, a deeper connection, a welcome. Each day is a marvel and a joy to be alive. It feels like I’m living in an alternate universe sometimes to know that this is normal daily life here. So hi hfx! I’m so happy to have wandered over this way.”

“I’m a medical student and I got to help deliver my first baby today, then I walked out on this beautiful sunny day and couldn’t help but cry a little. The world can feel so difficult and scary sometimes, but then you see this new little life so full of potential and surrounded by so much love. Everything feels so fresh and hopeful again. Happy birthday little one <3”
“The trees here are wonderful. I stopped to admire the big catalpa on Clinton St by Cunard the other day and was standing there for so long that someone came out of a house and stared at me a bit, probably to make sure nothing questionable was going on. Sorry, almost neighbour, for seeming suspicious, I was just hanging out with your tree.”
“So nice to see a fellow Wednesday public gardens birder here! When I go birdwatching I feel so much lighter than I did before. Walking through nature, trying to spot birds and hear their calls, seeing birds in the middle of migration, seeing families of them!!! Even gulls and starlings warm my heart!!! Taking time to focus on the world around me and all the beautiful lives in my area helps take me out of my own head for a moment :) thank you birds!!”
“I just moved here and I couldn’t have dreamed of a better place to live – I feel like I’m living in a postcard. Halifax is magical.”

“I’m studying in Halifax now, but I’m originally from Florida. Where I’m from the highs will be 3O C today. Perhaps it is sunny. Light celebrates the trees. Rain from last night is evaporating, steam is rolling off the pavement as the morning eagerly heats up into noon and refuses to slow down until the relief of dusk. Nothing happens today, it is too hot and there is no cool breeze and even the shade cannot save you. When it rains it is warm rain. I love to slosh through the puddles. After it rains, the whole city feels like a sauna. No one walks nowhere. I ride my bike, to spite the streets designed for cars. The sticky, sweaty heat makes everyone mad at everyone. At the beach, tourists can’t help but swim farther into the slick, warm, blue waters (it calls me too). A man collects seashells and arranges them in the sand. I pick up cigarette butts and synthetic flower petals. There will be a punk show in town tonight. There’s a sign taped over the hole punched in the wall last show. The venue will be sweaty and warm. I will go with my friends. It will be loud and I will be too tired to dance. I will be with my friends. I will be there.”
“Got my hands on a cd copy of The Chronic today. I don’t even have a cd player, i just thought it was cool. I should get a cd player.”
“I would just like to appreciate this toasted chocolate chip bagel from Uncommon Grounds, and this latte also from Uncommon Grounds, and everyone working at Uncommon Grounds today who has cheerfully and efficiently moved through a long line. I was feeling tired and cranky and y’all made me laugh and feel a lot better.”
“I recently went on a day trip with my parents, and wanted to do something outdoors but reasonably accessible since my dad isn’t the most mobile anymore. We ended up going to the boardwalk in Eastern Passage, and it was great. Totally flat and easy to walk. We saw lots of people with strollers and walkers, as well as locals walking their dogs. We stopped afterwards at the little Indonesian café there, and both the food and owners were delightful. 10/10 day.”
“When’s the last time you slowed down and took a proper stroll through our beautiful public gardens?”
“I take such pride when people talk about how beautiful and kind the Maritimes are. I may only be a small part of it, but I am a part of it.”
“Halifax is finally hopping on board with putting food sources in gardens instead of florals/decorations. Not big, just some chard for now, but it brings me hope that more gardens will be replaced with food sources for communities!!!”
“My mom is coming up from the US to visit me in Halifax tomorrow. I can’t wait to take her around to my favourite little nooks. She’s gonna love our used bookstores.”

“Finally participated in the free Wednesday morning birding walk at the Camphill Cemetery and Public Gardens. Arrived at 7:30 am to find a good sized crowd. Perfect way to start the day (and I spotted a Northern flicker, European starlings, a kingfisher and blue jays among other species).”
“Hi Halifax!
I’ve returned to Halifax recently after a few years being away. I love living abroad and traveling, but there is something so special and unique about Halifax and its inhabitants that keeps me returning.
You’re wise and forgiving and curious and open-minded.
I miss the music and arts scene that used to dominate around here, but I’m hopeful that this returns with a vengeance soon. Halifax still has a hint of its spark and I’m waiting to see that fire ignite again!”
“I turned 60 this year and retired from a wonderful career. I live within one kilometer of where I was born here in Halifax and wouldnt have it any other way. I feel so blessed to have had this life so far. My husband and I love to travel, see what other cities are up to, but to come home to Halifax is a privilege!”
“A kind Second Cup employee named Carson was an excellent server for me this afternoon. He did a great job and I’ll be leaving a good review for him somewhere.”
“I just moved here and I’m so charmed by your city and all of its lovely and talented people! The word “frig” has quickly become a staple of my vocabulary :) Shout out to the meatball hero at Salvatore’s”
“Had a very busy week at work otherwise, but things dropped off and got quiet today (Friday), enough that I had time to make a nice lunch. I hope everyone is feeling OK and has time/resources to look after yourselves at least a bit. You deserve it!”
“I like to go walk my dog in the South Commons at night. Sometimes there is an informal soccer or baseball game going on under the lights and usually a few people using the skate park.
It’s much more chill at night but still well-lit and you can pretty much park anywhere you want for free! Try it sometime. -KJ”
“Well isnt this a breath of fresh halifax crisp air! Cheers Halifax.”
“Thank you to all the lakes of Halifax for your ability to refresh and reset, your underwater otherworld that we can visit but never overstay, the sunsets and crisp blues you reflect. That on a drizzly grey morning you’re just as welcoming and comforting. I love you.”
“If I can stop one heart from breaking
by Emily Dickinson
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.”
“A huge fan of the Alderney library people. Great style, always fun chats, and they are oh so helpful. Last time I complemented one of them on the outfit, I felt like they sincerely bloomed. Made me feel good about humanity and connection”
“There’s still a lot of great stuff in this city if you know where to look.
Playing mahjong in Dartmouth Commons with some friends was some of the most fun I’ve had all year.”
“I love the idea of sharing nice things anonymously online. I was using the Kinder app which had a similar structure. Every day I’d receive something in my mailbox anonymously and I could send one too. I think it’s really awesome that you made one locally for Halifax. You’re pretty cool!! Keep it up :)”

“I finally got the job I’ve been hoping for. I start next week, I’m nervous but excited. Had time to do a good clean and reset of the apartment and spent the whole day with my partner for the first time in a while. It was really nice”
“Headed to pickup a package. Thats always exciting!”
“I’m so grateful to the teams of firefighters in Nova Scotia, who live here or from away, who are keeping us safe from the fires that popped up this summer. We hear about the big fires, but there were 100’s more that were contained that could have gone a lot worse. We can enter woods, walk the trails to school, forage safely, continue to love life as normal, all thanks to these fighters not giving up!”
“O hi! Gosh, Chocolate Lake is a super spot. With a great playground to boot. Thank you, HRM.”
“This summer has made me more grateful for rain, even if it comes on a weekend. It sounds so peaceful and it warms my heart to think of the thirsty plant life feeling rejuvenated.”
“The smell of seawater on my way to work reminds me to appreciate being here and being alive”

“Hi hometown Halifax, just visited you again this summer (I live in Ottawa now); you’re becoming so ritzy now (eg. “Water Polo” resto along the waterfront). Please keep that original humble and colourful/funky spirit! I think ideas like this “hi hfx” will help :-)”
“The muffins at Alteregos today were orange-chocolate, and they were delicious even by the high standards of Alterego muffins generally!”
“It’s my first time in Halifax (and Canada). It’s a crispy September night. I got pizza at Randy’s after I was told everything else would be closed. Don’t tell anyone I’m here”
“A total stranger stopped me at one of the bus terminals just to tell me that they liked my outfit. It absolutely made my day!”
“Ahoy!”
“Very grateful for the rainy day on Monday. I grew up in coastal BC where it is often very wet, and thought I’d never crave rain. But the absurd dryness out here lately has been enough to tip the balance.”
“Today (Tuesday aug 26) I saw a man watering the plants at the library! He was using pop bottle filled up with water and watering the flower beds around the side walks <3”
“There was a cruise ship in port yesterday with a giant electronic screen mounted on the back. This thing was so big that I found myself watching it from the 4th floor of the public library lol”
“I swim in a Dartmouth lake where an elderly woman also swims. She brings a friend or two. One leaves her walker right at the edge of the lake before wading in, the other uses a cane and carefully lays it on the water hyacinths before plunging in. The women float around in deep water, chatting and enjoying themselves. I love to see them.”
“West End yard sale day on Saturday the 9th was so much fun! I went to like 25 sales. Met a lot of my neighbours and had all sorts of nice conversations with sweet/interesting people. Found books, clothes, knickknacks, yarn, and a few helpful kitchen gizmos!”
“I love your city.”
“Gentle morning greetings of salty scented air floating lazily over my upturned face ..wisps of fluffy clouds reminding us to breathe..fog horns melancholy music amidst first sips of a creamy latté whilst pondering the unfathomable depths of a mystical harbor..the wondrous beauty of Halifax”
“This is a very sweet idea.”
“On the corner of South Park and summer st, enter the public gardens to find the most beautiful fiscus tree of all. It is my favourite tree to sit and read, or think under in this city, and I hope you go, enjoy it’s company and thank it for growing so big and beautiful.”
“The trees in this city are gorgeous”
“The graveyard on South Park Street has some gracious old trees to lean against, if you want a quiet spot to take off your socks and shoes in the grass, and listen to the breezes in the canopy.”
“Halifax. Because of its size, it’s easy to meet people, and then run into them again”
“This place is a refreshing respite from all the troubles going on throughout the world these days. I feel blessed to have found my way here. Greetings to all you good people!
I like to read, and am currently on ‘The Humans’ by Matt Haig. It’s unusual, and often quite hilarious.”

“Could you post messages more often, they’re inspiring”
“Halifax is truly so special, even in its imperfections. I love living here. It’s brought me nearly everything that’s good in my life — my friends, my job, my education, my living space. I love sitting outside working on my patio and sometimes chatting to my neighbours. I love walking in the Public Gardens. I love seeing the Bedford Basin in all its glory when I bus down Flamingo Drive. I love the sea air and the quality of the people here. It’s a beautiful place to call home, and I’m happy to live here. I hope you are too, my friend.”
“I really really love and appreciate when I can make eye contact with someone on the street. I am at a very friendless point in my life, so connecting with a fellow human by a mutual glance and a smile is something that goes a long way. We all live in the same city (and are all trying to live life as best we can on this earth) and I think that’s easy to forget. So toss a smile out! :) Hello to all my fellow humans!”
“Wind off the water, a deer disappearing into the woods, the dog sleeping under a shaft of sun. Summer has peaked, and a pocket of calm away from the chaos is a gift.”
“Checked out a new cafe “The Osney Cafe & Social”, food and drink were divine. I already check in on hihfx every once and a while but seeing the little green qr code in the cafe just made my day”
“At the park where I take my child, there is a group of older women who sit together on a bench and sing songs most evenings. I’m not sure if they are prayers or other songs because they are in another language, but it’s very sweet to see them together. Really brings a feeling of community to the playground.”
“I heard your interview on CBC radio this morning (August 6).
You sound like a lovely person, and what a grand idea to create this website. I hope it continues to be a labour of love for you; thank you for your focus on enhancing the quality of life for your fellow Haligonians!”
“I’m sitting on my balcony having my coffee and watching and listening to the leaves rustle in the big old oak tree in front of my place. Blue sky and cool morning air. I haven’t had time to volunteer for a month but I’m going in later today and can’t wait.”
“Sometimes I like to take the ferry to Dartmouth then get right back on the next one back to halifax. Its kinda peaceful if you ask me”

“I watched a 5 year old scamper down the sidewalk yelling enthusiastically about sharks & it made my day!”
“Hi hfx,
Lately I’ve been learning how to feel more comfortable in my own skin, how to identify what I truly enjoy without worrying about how others might judge me for it, how to create solely for my own enjoyment and fulfillment, and how to heal from deeply rooted pain. I wish I had learned how to do all of this years ago, before life got to be too much and I had to leave my beautiful home and all of my wonderful friends in order to find the peace and safety I needed to figure it out. I know some day I’ll make my way home though, and when I do I hope to see all your beautiful faces, whether that’s over a coffee at alter egos, outside a local show, or on the shoreline of our favourite swimming hole. Until then! xo
“My boyfriend came home after a long weekend away and we had a great date night together. I love him”
“By leaving, the dead leave space for us to fill…
When someone dies and we have known them, we can imagine walking through their outline, so that we too will be forever changed, and so on and so on, so that the things we do really can matter, to those we may not even have ever known.”
“Just heard about this/you on CBC Radio’s Information Morning… what a wonderful “old-school” idea to spread good will.”
“Went out for supper for the first time in a long time, had a great burger at The Bonfire and they didn’t charge me extra for a gluten free bun! Then I strolled through the commons watching kids on their bikes on the Oval, a group of women with a huge picnic of delicious-looking cut up fruit laughing and having a great time, people chilling in the beer garden…gorgeous summer vibes. There’s a reason why I love this town.”
“I saw a deer around the parking lot at work last week, I hope the deer was having as good of a day as I was.”

“I like seeing the regulars on the Woodside ferry to Halifax in mornings. I will never talk to most or any of them, probably, but that’s okay. I notice them and maybe they notice me too. And then we go about our day.”
“The cashier at the grocery store offered to drop off groceries to an elderly woman after their shift and we all chatted about independence and community and saving food in the freezer; I felt like I was in a different time in the best way.
Also: loving the taste of fresh peaches lately, mixed with coconut milk yogurt and honey.”

“I love the fact that sweet hereafter gives you free water. I know it’s not much, but it’s a really nice gesture imo”
“Today, The Dartmouth Comic Arts Festival was so special, full of creative people with beautiful artwork. It was my first time on the event, I got to get some cute things for myself and enjoy the nice weather on the waterfront waiting for the ferry. I wish summer never ended.”

“Just had another lovely breakfast at Cafe Good Luck, my favourite morning spot in Dartmouth. Cheers!”
“Does anybody remember that “sugar fix” ice cream place on spring Garden that opened last year? Now that it’s closed I’m starting to believe that it was a money laundering front lol”
“Thank you for doing this. When the news has gotten to be too much, I’ve searched for a community like this without much luck. CBC helps connect us as well, and that is where I heard you (you did a great job!).
This makes me think about the question ‘What would you say to everyone in the world if you could?’, and I’d like to offer some definitions to help the conversation:
-‘sex’ refers to your chromosomes, typically having a Y chromosome defines you as male, but not always (ex. female)
-‘gender’ refers to the societal pressures to conform to a role based on your sex, such as women being the primary caregiver for children (ex. woman)
-‘secondary sexual characteristics’ refer to your genitals and breasts, etc., which is the visual outcome (phenotype) defined by your chromosomes (genotype, primary sexual characteristics). There can be a lot of variation!
-2SLGBTQIA+ is unfortunately referring to many different concepts, including whether your chosen gender matches your sex, and which gender(s) you are sexually attracted to or not (using sex in the orgasm-y way here). No one has the right to tell you who you are attracted to or not.
If you’ve read this far, thanks for coming to my TED talk. I don’t want to detract from the easy-going nature of this message board, but I wish we could at least all be aware of what we’re trying to talk about as a society.
And to the creator of this website, thanks again, I’m sure your dad is proud.”
“There’s amazing music in the city… 7 nights/wk. Please check them out”
“Just listened to you on CBC great idea….”
“If you see a girl beaming wider than the sun… a girl so joyous and serene that the whole world around her stills… a girl whose laughter orchestrates the sidewalks of the south end like a heavenly aria… please know that she is listening to the most depraved, obscene and unapologetically horny smut the world has ever seen -the shameless fantasy romance audiobook addict”

“Halifax my 2nd home for over 25years…crisp ocean air that never fails to awaken you, evenings with a full moon at the harbor, the joy of spotting deer at Point Pleasant&feeling the trees come alive all around you with birdsong, a musical serenade at the gazebo at the enchanting Public Gardens, along with a great cup of local coffee served by an always friendly staff, a library that can’t help but inspire&mostly the smiles or hellos from a passing stranger just because that’s how it’s done here…no where else like it”
“Building community over the past few months has been amazing. Don’t be afraid to go to meetups alone!”
“Hi,
Visiting Halifax. My family and I met “living history,” a survivor from Africville. Such a delightful experience.
Lovely city.

“Hi hfx. Lately life has been moving too fast and my anxiety has been getting the better of me. All these lovely stories helped me to slow down and reflect on what I really need right now though. I think I’m going to try to make something nice for a friend. Perhaps I’ll go to the Neighbourly Market next week (Thursday at Park Lane Mall for anyone interested).”
“At the park with the fam enjoying ice cream on a cool Summer’s evening. Bliss.”
“Passing connections, saying hi, good morning or just acknowledging another person passing by on the sidewalk can be a wonderful positive feeling.”
“I get to see my friends today. My mom and I share time together over room temp coffee. My child and I talk about our special interests and I learn so much from them. My partner and I are going to start going to events again in Halifax. My favourite two coffee spots are Weird Harbour and Pane e Circo. I have the best job in the world and I can’t wait to see my boss and coworkers on Tuesday. Today’s weather is looking to be really nice. The plants in my yard look and smell divine. It’s really the little things that keep me going. -Tori”

“My bath mat is the best. It’s so soft and comfy and absorbent AND easily machine washable. By far my favourite part of taking a shower is getting out and putting my feet on the bath mat. Having been sitting here appreciating the bath mat, I’m now fantasizing about getting ridiculous plush carpets. I like this idea.”
“halifax has so many good ice cream + outside combos…here are my favorites:
1. pane circo gelato cart / waterfront
2. leonidas / public gardens
3. summernoon / peace & friendship park
4. dee dee’s / the commons”
“I think this is a wonderful idea. Have a great day”

“Such a truly beautiful day today. Love a little sun and wind!”
“Thinking about everyone and how tough things have been for a lot of people in Halifax the past several years. Love to all of you. Don’t forget to forge bonds with people in your community. We will all need one another in the near future, I think.”
“Making friends is such a beautiful rolling ball! I got someone’s number a few months ago, and since then have met so many other people through them, and had such good times with each other! Having friends is a fresh delight.”
“Warm sunny weekend morning, long walk to Uncommon Grounds, a muffin and a large iced matcha latte (like, they make it hot but stick ice in it so it’s an alluring mix of warm and cool).”
“I am excited because my family, who I haven’t seen all together in more than a year, is coming to Halifax soon!! Very much looking forward to watching sci-fi with my sister, and hugging both of my parents together.”
“I’ve been trying to get outside of my comfort zone lately by going to events and striking up conversations. I hope to keep practicing this and having deep discussions with folks in an age where introspection is discouraged.”
“Don’t know how I’m so late to the party but Gottingen Street across from the library is kind of a vegan paradise. Even if you don’t go to Springhouse or Real Fake Meats, G Street Pizza has a bunch of plant-based options and their pizza is delicious. So does Vandal Donuts! So much for eating healthy now that I live in the North End lol”
“Do something nice for someone random today and tell them to pass it forward! Show that true East Coast Love to one another!”

“Feeling confident”
“I got a new bike about a month ago and it’s been so much fun learning how to fix it and drive around Halifax. It is making me feel really reconnected to the community, in a way that I haven’t felt since I was quite young :)”
“Walked around Point Pleasant Park on July 1 and saw lots of wonderful things. A joyous Indo-Canadian gathering with food and dance; lots of giggling children; an Indigenous-themed pirate flag; high school students collecting data about local plant species on an app. I love our woods.”
“I am shy but I abstractly love everyone. I’m not lonely, but I constantly think about how amazing every single human life is and how much any of us can offer. I walk around wanting to mentally send love to pretty much any other people who would consent to receiving it. I have not figured out a way of getting the message across without either being a pushy weirdo or undermining my own little solitary world, but I think it all the time. I would be a hippie if I wasn’t so allergic to pseudo science.”
“I went for a walk with a new friend. At the beginning, we ran into one of her friends I hadn’t met, and there were hugs and smiles and introductions. At the beginning of the walk, we ran into ANOTHER one of her friends I hadn’t met, and there were more hugs and smiles and introductions.”
“The Bonfire on Robie just north of Cunard. They’re tip free because by default they pay all the employees fair wages! Also the ambiance is cozy (kinda rustic but laid back) and the food is good.”
“I forgot how fun it is to take the ferry over to Dartmouth on a sunny day.”
“helpful employees at the fenwick shoppers drug mart :)”

I am so grateful”
“I love “Have Fun” coffee, from a few places around Halifax, including Cafe Good Luck, where I saw the poster for this hihfx thing. I also enjoyed Oxalis, down the street. The weather has been beautiful and I’ve enjoyed just sitting outside and reading a book.”
“Today I went in Ramblers coffee before work for a bite to eat, they had a new little volume on sale – Citymouse by Eleanor Hannon. I bought it on a whim but I wasn’t prepared for how beautiful a story it would tell.
Illustrated and poetic, I felt it in my soul.”
“Moving home for the first time in a decade. It’s bittersweet, saying goodbye to so many good people, while holding so much hope for new and old things. Halifax, we can’t want to see you! And just in time for Pride too <3”

“i went for a quick walk instead of yelling at myself today and saw some beautiful flowers”
“I turned 30 this year and I decided to pick back up painting and sketching as a hobby. It was 7 years ago since I last picked up my sketch book, it doesn’t feel that long ago to me but the dates on the pages of my last sketch don’t lie.
I suppose time got away from me – but I’m not upset about it. Maybe I was exploring ways to express myself, finding the shoe that fits best. Maybe I still am.”
“I went to the Fish in a Birdcage show at the Seahorse, and it was a lovely experience. I enjoyed the level of crowd participation in singing along (So much enthusiasm!). I like the music even more having seen the artists joy in performing it, and hearing about his musical experimentations, particularly in tinkering with odd tunings of string instruments. If you have an extra moment or two, I strongly recommend listening to the song that gives the band its name, “Rule 4: Fish in a Birdcage.” It is about being an able creature in the wrong environment, and depending on others to make the experience easier.”
“Wild roses smell so nice!!! Literally stop and smell the roses dooo it!”
“The summer malaise has started kicking in for me… I’m used to having some kind of schedule (school/work/club etc.), so in the summer i get mega-ennui. Ideally I would have some kind of accountability partner, where we both make sure we do something each day, but no luck. Hey week 5, do you know of any good hobby clubs in Halifax?
Hihfx is something to look forward to! It feels very old-school internet, and I like that it’s updated weekly.
– Mr. Hobby”
“Out for a dog walk with Ash. Slowed down and saw your sign.
Take time to smell the roses.”
“Wasn’t the Hydrostone Haul neighbourhood yard sale so delightful? Apart from the obvious deals … the conversations, connections and general cheer; it was all so heartwarming and sincere!
The boulevards were bustling with so many kids , dogs and laughter! I needed that more then I knew”
“i was looking to upgrade my bike, but didn’t want another hunk of junk from Canadian Tire or Walmart. i recently learned about “Bike Again!” in the north end and decided to check them out. it was so cool! they teach people in the community how to fix/care for their bikes every Wednesday and Thursday. they offer a wide range of tools, every type of bike part, and refurbished bikes ready to purchase. the volunteers were knowledgeable and did not judge me for having no experience. i got a beautiful refurbished bike for a great price! it made me so happy to see this community project serve so many cyclists. it was packed full of people tuning up their rides, asking questions, and connecting with their neighbors! <3 i will definitely be returning when my bike needs some TLC! in the age of overconsumption, i love the idea of really investing in your belongings, whether it be a pair of jeans or a bike — i look forward to caring for it and giving it new life.”
“I am so late for the movies and I still have to pee before I go in but I am having a really good time reading all these while walking there :)”

“Life is better barefoot.

“What I was thinking about on my walk home this evening (after seeing a “Trans People Belong Here” sticker on a pole): I am cis and only a little bit queer, but I adore my trans/nonbinary/queer/Two-Spirit friends and family and coworkers SO MUCH. Even strangers in the same city – hence why I’m sharing here. I will always fight alongside you. It breaks my heart that there is so much bigoted nonsense, lack of understanding, medical gatekeeping, fearmongering, etc. out there. You deserve better and ASAP. I don’t have much relevant lived experience – my parents happened to guess correctly about what my gender identity would be, and nothing guaranteed that – but I spend a lot of time listening to trans/nonbinary/etc. perspectives, (hopefully) deferring to and acknowledging who has taught me, when appropriate, and recommending resources from insider voices. I’m a 40ish community educator (for the sake of anonymity, let’s say “first aid training”), and have updated a whole pile of our educational materials to be MUCH more inclusive and thoughtful (or so I hope – but even I can see that it’s a lot better than it was). I also answer lots of questions from uncertain cis people (some well-meaning, some not), so am hopefully taking a bit of the pressure off the whole cringeinducing Trans 101 thing. It’s a start. Sending out lots of love.”
“Walked by a yard sale I didn’t know was happening. Found a gorgeous little antique table that seriously needed to be in an empty corner in my apartment. It’s wonderful!”
“Brothers Pepperoni and hot peppers make great pizza toppings.”
“I moved to dartmouth in mid 2022 with my immediate family, which essentially reset my social life. the closest acquaintance of mine for a good 6 months was my coworker. as a stupid and silly way of trying to make new friends, i started tagging HRM with stickers that i wrote my social handles on. was eventually added by someone who would go on to introduce me to my current girlfriend. surreal to think about how much my life has been improved by a single sticker I haphazardly stuck to the back of a seat on a bus. happy pride month, halifax

“I spent the day yesterday taking pictures at a car event to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy. Im fried to a crisp from the sun but it was worth it! <3”
“One of my favorite places in Kjipuktuk is the cafe across the street from Cafe Lara, and next to Randy’s pizza. It’s called Cafe de le Calavera Negra, and it’s run by an awesome guy who played me in (and helped teach me) chess. It’s extremely affordable, and the coziest spot in the city to hang out, read a book, and chat with strangers (or exist quietly). You can buy a book for 2 dollars and return it for a free coffee. There’s a beautiful patio around the back and a gender-neutral washroom. There’s one or two steps to get in the front door. What a beautiful place that makes our home what it is <3”
“I’m thinking of re-learning how to knit, to go along with the other crafts I’ve been trying to start and the mending skills I’m doing my best to learn.
It feels nice to be able to make something tangible. It feels nice to be able to fix something so it can keep on keeping on.
So we can keep on keeping on.”
“Uncommon Grounds has the best chai latte in the city! Ask for the grizzly chai if they still have it, it’s extra spicy. :)”
“Biking over the bridge to Montreal Bagel Style!”
“The sun is out, the trees are unfurling their leaves, and I’m grieving on the bus. The buds didn’t know the world their precious leaves were about to join. My heart is tired. Of people choosing hate (fear). Of children burning (whole families bombed). Of not seeing my brother for the past year (transphobia). Of the emotional labour of speaking truth to power again and again (resistance). Tomorrow I’ll drive to the countryside, open the window wide, and loosen this grief a bit, share it with the wind, let myself be embraced by the wide open fields, maybe sink my feet into the sand, and ask for the courage to keep carrying this tender, beautiful, heavy heart.”

“Today was was great,
Life is hard
Even at that, I’m kinda starved.”
“I’m so glad people are posting here! I have a suggestion: you should put a copy of the hi hfx flyer on the website. That way people can print them out and put them in their office/school/favorite cafe if they want.
My win this past week has been learning HTML. I built a website (radpride.neocities.org) for a local queer team. It was a lot of fun to work on and learn about. I recommend everyone check out neocities.org . You can build a website for free and they have a (small) HTML tutorial. W3Schools is also a great resource for this. Create a local independent website! Two cakes!!”
“I went to the waterfront to meet some folks for a walk and ran into a new friend and a very old friend at the Seaport Market after! So grateful that we have these spaces to connect with people.”

“My elementary school friend finally got a kidney donor. He’s been waiting three years for a match.
Also, love the idea of this, so glad I paused to scan the code.”
“When I was in my undergrad, I got a little five month old tuxedo kitten. Now she is four years old, and she is so special to me and I absolutely love her! She’s my baby girl <3
I’m currently reading ‘humble pi’ by Matt Parker.”
“I was able to spend a nice evening around my house with my dad. I’m currently in ontario for vacation, but we were able to chat and chat and weed gardens and seed grass and chat and chat and give the birds food and string up some flowers and fill the hummingbird feeder (which hasn’t been done in *years*). Anywho, it was a great evening and I felt so much love”
“This is beautiful.”
“I had the most innocent and enjoyable conversation with an 84-year-old woman out for a walk near Quinpool the other day. I was late for my meeting but I got to hear her explain the difference between High German and Low German. She does not like the war movies the old men in her building watch, so she goes for walks in the evening”
“I forgout about this site until an email popped up in my inbox… it was the nicest way to be reminded that good does exist in the world, and that people are kind to each other. I hope to see all of y’all in the streets someday, whether or not we know :))”
“I saw a sticker for this near my apartment on Barrington. Projects like this matter so much in a world at the brim of fascist solitude. Reading shared stories love, little joys, and memories is going to be such a fun pastime upon revisiting this site :)”
“Went to a pollinator presentation night and Q&A at SMU. I’m kinda just drifting through life right now and it was really nice to be surrounded by people so passionate and involved. (Highly recommend checking out the jarvis series organized by friends of the public gardens”

“I just found a restaurant that has really good spicy fries, it’s called “iron rooster.” I’ve been struggling to make friends recently, but one thing that has helped me has been picking up a hobby. Now when I am doing embroidery or some thing in public, people come up and complement my work and they start a conversation with me!”
“a few songs for content, sunny mornings:

“I’m so glad it’s finally summer! I can wear my pirate/adventure style again, go to the beach in the sun, go hiking, and now every day feels like a mini adventure. I wish everyone has a wonderful summer this year”

“Trident cafe. Quiet, calming, and cozy <3”
“I first came to Halifax 30 years ago, never imagining that it would become my home, but its charm and the charm of the people made it immediately apparent to me that I was in the right place. I raised my son here, went to school here, cultivated multiple careers here, and developed friendships here that I hope will last a lifetime. Life has had its ups and downs and the city has gone through and continues to go through a lot of changes, but I have absolutely no regrets!

“my friends having a bit of a rough time and i’m recovering from surgery so we went to YOLO craft and made crazy photo frames and took pictures to put in those frames. Cheered us both up and was the best way to spend a Saturday morning :)”
“More people need to be able to hang out without having to chat. Let’s just sit and coexist. Let’s look at the same waves and wonder if we perceive their colour and curves the same way.”
“Things like this, is exactly why I love this city.”
“A couple weeks ago, a guy who didn’t speak much English was playing music in front of my workplace, but he played the old Italian anti-fascist anthem “Bella Ciao” and it filled me with a lot of joy (so I tipped him $6 and an IWW sticker).”
